Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic dentistry. Teeth tend to become pale, yellowish, discolored, or stained with age. It happens more severely in cases where a person frequently consumes certain colored foods, aerated drinks, tea, coffee, or tobacco. Other reasons for such occurrences include certain types of medications that may impact the color of the teeth in the long run.

The result is that people who suffer from such conditions tend to hide their teeth, and do not smile or laugh freely in public. This is where teeth whitening can resolve their problem quite effectively in most cases. Dr. Alison P. Schwartz recommends that anyone who is conscious about the poor color of their teeth should opt for teeth whitening once a year. It is a simple, efficient and non-invasive way to achieve whiter and brighter teeth.

Dr. Schwartz says that hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are generally the best available chemicals to be used in the teeth whitening process. The chemical opens the tubules of the tooth structure, goes into the outer enamel layer of the tooth and breaks down the hard stains. Once the process is completed, the whitening agent is removed from the teeth and the natural saliva seals the tooth perfectly.

For people with a severe condition of pale, discolored or stained teeth, Dr. Schwartz recommends an in-office tooth whitening procedure. It is a more effective procedure because a strong concentration of the whitening agent can be used under the dentist’s direct supervision. Therefore, effective results can be achieved in a single visit to the dentist’s office.

The other option is to get custom-made trays and the teeth whitening solution from the dentist, and perform the procedure at home. With the dentist’s guidance, effective results can be achieved with this procedure, although it may take a longer time to get results.

There are also over-the-counter teeth whitening kits available, but Dr. Schwartz advises that the concentration of such products is so weak that it does not usually produce the desired results. Dr. Schwartz also cautions against the self-use of teeth whitening procedures for small children, pregnant women and for patients with very sensitive teeth.
