Dental implants require a large amount of bone mass for stability. If a patient has experienced bone loss for any reason, he or she may need to visit Dr. Alison P. Schwartz for a bone graft in Scottsdale, AZ before implants can be placed. There are three main types of bone grafts:
· Autogenous graft
Each tooth in your mouth is surrounded by a special type of bone which exists entirely to hold your teeth in their sockets. When a tooth is lost, this bone ceases to have a function and will gradually become resorbed by the body. This is problematic if you plan to have dental implants in the future because there may not be enough bone to provide adequate support.
A bone graft is a procedure in which Dr. Schwartz will take a bone sample and attach it to the area where the dental implants will be placed. There are three main types of bone grafts available which differ in where the bone sample is taken from. An autogenous graft takes bone from another area of the patient’s body, such as the chin. An allograft borrows the bone from a cadaver or a bone bank. A xenograft takes bone from a nonhuman source, such as a bovine. Each type of graft has its own advantages and the type you receive will depend on your condition as well as personal preference.
Dr. Schwartz will first administer a local anesthetic to numb the area and minimize the amount of discomfort that is experienced. Then, a small incision is made in the gums surrounding the area where the bone graft will take place. If an autogenous graft is being performed, a second incision will be made below the lower front teeth to allow access to the chin bone.
Once the bone sample has been attained, it will be set in place and held there with titanium screws. Dr. Schwartz will then use a mixture of bone marrow and graft material to facilitate the healing process before closing the area with sutures.
Bone grafts are beneficial, and at times necessary, to ensure successful dental implant procedures. To learn more about getting a bone graft in Scottsdale, AZ to support dental implants, contact Dr. Schwartz and schedule your consultation today!
