Dentures

Dentures refer to a set of artificial teeth that are designed to act as a replacement for missing teeth. Dentures represent a traditional solution which is more popular with older patients who may have several or all teeth missing. Dentures can be partial or full, depending on the number of missing teeth.

Dentures are typically made of acrylic and resin based teeth. Some superior qualities in dentures are available with porcelain teeth that give a more natural appearance. However, in modern restorative and cosmetic dentistry, dentures are considered a poor replacement for missing teeth.

There are several problems with dentures that make them an undesirable solution. They cause a persistent discomfort in the mouth because they are not a permanent fixture. The patient feels the presence of a foreign body in the mouth all the time. In many cases, the dentures become loose after a while and do not fit properly. That can cause hindrance while eating or speaking, and there is a constant fear of the dentures falling out from the mouth.

Some dentists recommend denture adhesives to keep the dentures firmly in place. However, Dr. Schwartz discourages the use of denture adhesives except under special circumstances. Dr. Schwartz recommends one or two dental implants with the purpose of keeping dentures firmly in their place. This is a good way to ensure that dentures are well fitting and cause the least discomfort.

If the patients have just a few missing teeth, the ideal solution is dental implants. Dr. Schwartz prefers the use of dental implants because unlike dentures, the implants are permanent in nature. They integrate with the bone naturally and stay in place permanently. There is no discomfort and special care or maintenance required once a dental implant is in place.
